Don’t expect a little thing like a tornado ripping barns up 10 miles a way to stop the festivities at the 5th annual Bare Bones International Film Festival. No way! The show goes on.

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but when I walk into the BBIFF office I knew ‘I had arrived’ when Shiron got up from her desk and gave me an big hug and Oscar Ray, her husband, and  a handsome  black man you don’t want to tangle with, Hell, he played  Superman once, slapped me on the back and said Don ‘Welcome, Be proud to be an Okie from Muskogee’, he meant it. So damn the tornado, it was full fun ahead.

My first stop was to put some posters up then I did an interview that was posted on the web( I send the URL and yes, Jason J, I plugged your new project)

The welcoming party was moved inside because of the weather where we filmmakers were welcomed by the Chamber of Commerce and the City Manager ( mayor) The Tribute to Filmmaker C. Ned Hockman was moving. Ned learned photojournalism during the WWII.  There was Hot Links, Pork barbecue  and a toe stomping band. Just when I was about to say ‘well it doesn’t get any better than this’ it did.

We watched 8 shorts that were well made and acted. QA with the filmmaker rounded out he evening. Made lots of great contacts. Talked about the Indianapolis Film group and of course my new project.

The Friday report, OK I know it’s Saturday but I just woke up. The screening of Losers Lounge went well, Wasn’t a huge crew but everyone enjoyed the movie. I watch some good flicks and the Mayor took me to dinner. Well he took Laurie, I just happen to be with her then, but he treated us. The mayor is a still photographer and enjoys talking to filmmakers. He enjoyed Losers Lounge. Laurie lives in LA and her film The White Room, was to  date one of the best screened. There were some good flicks that were more ‘youth’ orientated  including  Single and Single and Dealing With it, Lenny & Oz and American Alien, and Why we Had to Kill Bitch, a great comedy from some Philly filmmakers.  I am going to catch some panel discussions today.

Saturday - Mostly did networking today, sold some DVD, and gave some away. There are filmmakers from all over. Three from LA, two from Michigan, some from Pennsylvania, one from Canada and other parts of the US .

I saw some very good documentaries and comedies and two good dramas.  The festival was a well-run event.

I saw the following movies that impress me;

Burying the Past, A documentary about The Mountain Meadows Massacre in Utah.  Well done factual account about an event the Mormons would like to forget.

The Question of Life, A documentary about well the meaning of life as told be a musician, a taxidermists, a male disco  dancer, and a junk collector.

American Alien, Mocumentary, well made, very funny.

The White Room, A mind thriller, I saw it twice, I believe the best movie shown great acting and camera work.

Single and Dealing With it. A very well done Life at thirty movie,  funny, in your face, a hard look at sex, marriage, and filmmakers. Outstanding camera work.

The Sacrifice, a well made romance Drama, some great shots and acting.

Lenny & Oz, a good sex- drinking movie with a twist.

By it’s Cover, another well made youth movie.

Sold a short B&W about a pencil salesman.

The Third Society, a Female Action Adventure.

Clean Flicks,  A documentary about well, the folks at clean flicks.

The Regular Guy, a very short comedy, lots of laughs.

And I am sure I missed a couple that I saw and liked.

Seven foot poster.

Sunday waiting to go into the awards ceremony. Ned Hockman arrived, his son-in-law was driving. I went over to introduce my self and we talked for several minutes. Ned knows everyone who is anyone and has trained many photojournalism and moviemakers. He wanted a copy of Losers Lounge and it was my honor to give him a copy.  I had to leave the awards, just as they were starting, to catch my plane.

Epilogue:

Every filmmaker I met was glad they came to this festival. It was good to see so many Female filmmakers. I would encourage Indy filmmakers to submit their works next year, and if they are lucky enough to be accepted expect a friendly reception and a great time
