John Franz |
Streetsinger John Franz has been a staple of Nashville life for well over a decade. But where does he go after Christmas? Unlike the birds he doesn't migrate south. No, Franz heads west, to Bloomington, where he sets up shop outside the Jackson Creek Plaza-East Kroger. |
| The town of Nashville has a lot of history. But then again, so does John Franz. And for 12 years of Nashville's history, you'll find John Franz in it.
"I found my place in it all," says John. The 60-year-old man has been making a living in music since 1972, and has been in Nashville since Memorial Day, 1989. "Playing in the streets, that's half the enjoyment of it." John's big white beard and long, wiry, brownish-gray hair make him look old; his hefty brown work boots, faded blue jeans, and old t-shirts and flannels make him look rustic; his warm smile and honest demeanor make him feel friendly. "I used to be shy," he says, and from the looks of it, maybe he still is. But it's an inviting shyness. John sits on a large stone by his corner, beneath the large Artist's Colony Inn sign surrounded by flowers & red sticker-bushes. He talks with a young couple as he changes a string, waving to occasional passers-by who shout in acknowledgment. The couple had been captivated by John's songs minutes ago; now they seem content listening to this "ol' folkie" talk a bit about the town that he's made his home for so long, filling its streets with his voice, and his personality. Since he came to Nashville, John has been a bit of a fixture of the town. Every year he stands outside playing his guitar, despite harsh weather. He only stops playing if it gets below 20 degrees or if there's a wind chill of 0 degrees. "No play, no pay," he says. "But as I get older, it gets harder. But I've never been on welfare, or food stamps, or unemployment." But that doesn't mean it's been easy on John. John was born in Wichita, Kansas, and grew up in Scottsburg, Indiana. Originally a physics major at Indiana University in neighboring Bloomington, John dropped out of college in 1961. "I was a southern hillbilly, and was blown away. It was culture shock," he says. John then decided to join the USAF. Up in the mountains of Oregon, John worked as an electronics technician for the USAF at a radar station. It is there he started singing and playing guitar, with a group modeled after the Kingston Trio, a famous Appalachian group known for their vocal harmonies. "I think we called ourselves the Westwinds," he says. "'Greenback Dollar' was the first song I learned to play; it was by the Kingston Trio." After his tour of duty, John moved back to Indiana and worked at Indiana Bell, playing and singing at parties on the side. Wanderlust struck John, and 3 years later he set off for the Virgin Islands, swept away in the counter-culture that was spreading across the states like wildfire. |
