Carol and I separated in late 1972, I was working for the Near Eastside Community Organization (NESCO), NESCO was started by an Alinsky trained organizer. The neighborhood was  predominantly white folks area (85%) with lots these white folks beings from Ten, Ky and other parts of the south.  The Organization received some money for CAP and most of its operational money from a  foundation grand. I started worked there in late 1971. In 1973 we filed an administrative complaint with the GAO charging the city with failing to follow model cities guidelines for citizen participation. The Feds withheld 40 million dollars from the city, and in 1973, 40 million was real money. The city was forced to sign a memorandum of understanding with NESCO and pledged to follow federal law. NESCO receive city money as a results of the agreements which paid my salary.

Now that NESCO had Fed money I arranged for the person who started NESCO, who was living in central FL to have someone from the housing board invite me down, it was a junket and I was able to watch Apollo 17.

When I returned I was working on another junket, when one person who was working for Urban Renewal as an organizer  got very upset and enlisted the help of someone else to get me fired. I invited that person over to my apartment for lunch, and fixed him the ‘best’ omelet he ever had, so he withdrew his support to fire me. So now there was nothing else to do but marry the person who started the fuss, so in December  of 1973 Suellen and I were married.

I left NESCO  May 1974.

Boy did we know how to dress back then!

I worked in NYC for a few months but the job did not work out so I returned to Indianapolis where I worked in the Democratic primary for mayor candidate Bill Schreiber

We lost, but I was able to get a patronage job with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department as a Civil Deputy. There were two kinds of Civil Deputies, retired police and fireman and  the young guys who wanted more than anything else to become a real policemen. Then there was me. I used to eat in the jail every now and then, it was free, we had to check our guns, well after I finished eating one time the lieutenant called me aside to inform me that my gun had a paper in the barrow, and that I should clean my gun at least every night, because you never know.
